After a two-year hiatus because of COVID-19, the Calcutta Memorial Day celebration is back.

Festivities will get underway at 12:30 p.m. Sunday with a flag-raising ceremony at Calcutta Community Park, at the corner of Calcutta-Smith Ferry and Sprucevale roads.

The Steel Valley Drums & Pipes will make a return appearance, said Eldena Gearhart, executive director of the St. Clair Township Travel & Tourism Bureau.

The remainder of the event will be held at Calcutta Square Plaza, with live music beginning at 1:30 p.m. and continuing throughout the day.

This year marks the 20th year that the township has sponsored a Memorial Day celebration — but not the 20th annual because COVID forced the cancellation of events in 2020 and 2021, said St. Clair Township Trustee Jim Sabatini.

Other highlights of the day include:

— 1:30 p.m. — Calcutta Volunteer Fire Department’s water battle (fire truck lineup and registration begins at 1 p.m.)

— 1-3 p.m. — Chalk art contest.

— 2-7 p.m. — Car cruise.

— 2-7 p.m. — Kids Fun Zone.

Gearhart said 15-16 concessions are expected so far. There will also be a 50/50 drawing and a silent auction featuring 60-65 gifts.

* Threw their support behind Columbiana County Engineer Bert Dawson and his efforts to obtain a federal grant to fund an updated environmental study on the U.S. Route 30 corridor.

The Rural Surface Transportation Grant would update the environmental studies for the stretch of Route 30 that runs through Columbiana County — the first step toward widening the highway from two lanes to four lanes.

“This project will create a safe, effective means of east-west travel across Columbiana County, connecting western Pennsylvania and East Canton (and) opening the entire area to economic development,” trustees said in their letter of support.

The letter said the Columbiana County section of the highway is the “missing link” that needs to be widened like other sections of Route 30 in Ohio.

The letter said the widening is necessary to improve motorist safety and to accommodate growth in truck travel because of oil and gas exploration, the scheduled opening of the Royal Dutch Shell cracker plant in Monaca, Pa., and the opening of two regional natural gas power generation stations.

“The grant funding would enable revisiting the prior environmental, planning and preliminary engineering reports previously completed on an improved Route 30 corridor,” the letter said.
